Getting ad data in — CSV upload versus ad-account connectors
For ad performance analysis, should I upload CSVs or connect my ad accounts?
Daily auto-refresh needs a connector. Weekly checks with data kept local suit CSV uploads.
There are two ways to bring ad data into an analysis tool. You can export a CSV from each platform and upload it, or connect your ad accounts so data is pulled on a schedule. Neither is better in general; the answer depends on refresh frequency, account permissions, and where the source data should live. Growth Opt Playbook uses CSV uploads and does not connect to ad accounts.
Side by side
| Criterion | CSV upload | Ad-account connector (API) |
|---|---|---|
| Data refresh | Export from each platform and upload (manual) | Automatic sync on a schedule |
| Permissions needed | No ad-account access; the file is enough | Approval for ad-account access |
| Source data handling | This product computes in the browser and does not send source rows to a server | The connector service pulls and processes the data (retention varies by service) |
| Multiple accounts and platforms | One upload per file; no multi-account permission management | Connect accounts and manage them in one place |
| Matching columns | Headers differ by platform, so mapping is needed (auto-detected, then fix what is wrong) | The connector aligns fields, using the service's definitions |
| What it takes to start | Analyze right away, no signup or connection | Connection setup and permission approval |
Which one to use
- If a dashboard must refresh itself every morning
- Use a connector. This product does not offer live sync or automatic refresh.
- If you review performance weekly and decide next steps
- CSV uploads are enough. Export and upload once a week.
- If you cannot grant ad-account access to an outside service
- Use CSV uploads. Analysis runs on the exported file without any account connection.
- If you need to combine numbers across platforms
- Either way, check first that each platform uses a different attribution basis. Combining them does not make one standard.
Frequently asked questions
No. You upload a CSV exported from each platform. Live API sync, automatic refresh, and multi-account permission management are not provided.
Usually not. Fields such as date, cost, and conversions are matched from column names, and you only fix wrong matches. If a required field is not matched, you are told before the analysis starts.
No. The sheet is read through its public URL; it is not an ad-account connection. The sheet must be public, so use a file upload for sensitive data.
