ASO (App Store Optimization)

Improving search visibility and install conversion inside the app stores

In one line

Every ad click still installs on the store. ASO (App Store Optimization) is the work of getting your app shown more often inside the App Store and Google Play, and converting more of those impressions into installs.

It is really two different jobs

Treating ASO as "adding keywords" misses half of it. Two distinct things are bundled together.

  • Visibility — which searches surface your app. App name, subtitle, keyword field and description drive this.
  • Conversion — whether people install once they see it. Icon, screenshots, first line, ratings and reviews decide this.

Work out which one is broken first. If impressions are plentiful and installs are not, more keywords will not help.

It is tied directly to paid efficiency

This part gets forgotten. Users you paid for still pass through the store page. Lifting store conversion from 30% to 40% produces 33% more installs on the same spend — that is a direct cut to CPI.

So ASO is not only the organic owner's job; it sits on top of paid channel efficiency too.

Traps when verifying

Keyword rank alone creates an illusion. A rank can improve on a term with no volume and installs will not move. Read install conversion against store impressions alongside it.

And change one thing at a time. Swapping icon, screenshots and description together leaves you unable to tell what worked — the same principle as any controlled test.

Local search intent, metadata, and the screenshot review order are covered in the ASO basics guide.

Frequently asked questions

How is ASO different from SEO?
Both deal with search visibility, but ASO happens entirely inside the app stores and the step right after visibility is an install. That makes screenshots, icon and ratings — everything that drives conversion — as important as keywords.
How does ASO relate to paid advertising?
Users you buy still pass through your store page. When store conversion is weak, CPI rises accordingly, so ASO affects paid channel efficiency and not only organic installs.
How do you verify that ASO worked?
Keyword rank alone is misleading. Look at install conversion against store impressions, and change one element at a time so a before-and-after comparison can attribute the difference.
